15th December 2009 – To snow or not to snow?

Written on December 15, 2009 – 7:36 pm | by BryonyParkes |

A pondering this evening…

I took this photo today:

Sweet huh? I have to say though, that I originally thought there was something missing. I wanted it to look festive, how otherwise do you know that they are Christmas cards she’s posting?

So I had a look at Picnik and found a snowy effect. I was rather dubious at first, thinking it wouldn’t look particularly realistic, but I was surprised at the results!

Obviously there’s no snow on the ground or on top of the letterboxes, but if you had seen the edited shot without reading this post, would you have known the snow was fake? I’m not sure I would have. I like! Thumbs up to Picnik.

Lets go the whole hog, and make it look like a Christmas Card!

Too much? Maybe, but I love it anyway and the final version was my PAD for today.

I’ll be interested to know though, which version do you prefer?

Happy Christmas :-D

4th December 2009 – Christmas Card fun

Written on December 4, 2009 – 11:43 am | by BryonyParkes |

This year, as mentioned in a previous blog post, I am making our Christmas cards to keep costs down. I’ve got some prints on order from Snapfish which I’ll then use to do some arty crafty stuff one evening next week.

If you’re on our Christmas card list, you can still look if you like. These are a couple of the shots I took, but the picture I’ve chosen for the final result I’ve helpfully omitted from this small selection at the moment ;-)

My two little girls:

Alice (3 years 8 months)

Evie (10.5 months)

I wanted them bright to contrast with the card I’ve bought to put the photos on so crept up the exposure during editing. I didn’t want the shutterspeed any slower due to the fact I was shooting children after all yet didn’t want to make the aperture any wider as i wanted more in focus (still bearing in mind wanting to use natural light as much as possible, loving the 50mm). I am pleased with them though, and I love the effect. It gives the impression of wintery wonderland I like to think. Please share with me your Christmas Card photos if you have some, I love seeing them!

Photos taken at 1/100 and f/3.5

21st November 2009 – Christmas Greetings?

Written on November 21, 2009 – 10:49 pm | by BryonyParkes |

It’s only November I cry!

But it’s only 5 weeks until Christmas.

We’ve had to seriously tighten our belts this year so I’ve decided to make our cards this year using a photo or two, some card and some glue. My lovely readers of this blog who are on our Christmas Card list possibly should look away now!

Seriously, I wasn’t expecting to get any decent shots tonight, as my daughter paraded around in a lovely little fairy outfit pretending to magic us all into pretty princesses (Daddy included). I was planning on waiting until tomorrow when there was better lighting, batteries in my flash gun, a background set up and of course, the small one included in shot. But then I took this while messing about:

Eeeep. I’m not going to get that exact moment again am I? I should have the small one within the frame too shouldn’t I? Even the lighting isn’t too bad, if a tad noisy due to a fairly high ISO (it was taken at about 5.30pm in the evening with just the living room bulb to assist me). Her hair could have done with a little brush, but don’t you just love the curls? The crop was accidental, but I think it adds to the magic.

It may not be technical goodness, but I love it. It may be a contender for the Christmas Cards. Hmmm. Decisions decisions. I think I’ll save it and wait to see what I come up with tomorrow as well…

Photo taken at (ooh, haven’t done this for a while on the blog!) 1/30 and f/2.0

17th November 2009 – Park fun

Written on November 17, 2009 – 4:33 pm | by BryonyParkes |

Have just returned from an hour running around the park. Had some good fun and well needed fresh air.

I realised once out that Winter is starting to make an impression. It’s getting rather cold and their is a sharp edge to the wind. We’re getting very dark evenings some days as early as 3pm and you need to put the light on, and it’s raining more and more. But who said that photography during the Winter needs to be dark and dreary?

And anyway, this is also a blatant excuse to show off my girls!

16th November 2009 – Stratford Beauty

Written on November 17, 2009 – 4:32 pm | by BryonyParkes |

Over the weekend, my big girl and I went to Stratford to meet up with some Photographer friends of mine. We had a wander around the beautiful streets of central Stratford, including the church where Shakespeare is buried. I had a lovely time, and although I didn’t take many photographs it was all worth it after seeing how into her camera my daughter got. I was very impressed with her take on things, especially just using an old digital camera of mine (the very first I owned! Canon Powershot A1) and having to keep up with several other grown ups! Would you like to see them?

By the way, she’s 3.5 years old and I haven’t edited them a single bit :-)

Taken of a poster advertising the 12th Night!:

                                                           And here’s me!

Am chuffed with her efforts. Even if said camera did get dropped at the end of the day. On the lens. Completely unrepairable!  However, the very kind Mother In Law has offered to pass on her old digital camera, so I think I’ll buy or make a neck strap, and hey presto, she’s sorted once again. I’ll let you know how she gets on!

I’ll finish with a few of the shots I took the same day:

And finally, here’s a shot of my mini-me working:
